a quiet end to the year
2024 · 12
Seeing the year out quietly. No plans, nowhere to be, which suits us both. M. taught me a card game after supper, one from childhood, and the rules kept growing every time I started to lose. I noticed and said nothing. We played at the window with the lamp on and the dark outside and I lost most of the hands.
It was an ordinary year. A few projects half-done. The drawer still squeaks. A book I've barely started, a bread I won't give up on. Put like that it's almost nothing, but the weeks were full enough at the time.
I started writing these in the autumn for no real reason. Glad I did, though. I can actually remember the last couple of months now instead of them going grey and smearing together.
M. has gone to put the kettle on. Warm room, a lost card game, tea coming.
