a year of week notes

2025 · 11

Worked out it's been about a year of these. First one was some grey week last November — a loaf that came out like a brick, a drawer that squeaked. I didn't think I'd keep it going. I don't keep most things going.

Still can't really say why I do it. It's not a diary; there's nothing in here I'd mind anyone reading, which is sort of the point. It's more that a week vanishes completely if you don't put a hand on it somewhere. Write down that you pickled the carrots, or that the tree finally turned, and the week has something to hang on. Otherwise it's all just "a busy while."

Reading back, the same few things keep going round. The bread, up and down. The park in whatever weather. Jobs I put off and then, now and then, actually did. Some of it reads like complaining but mostly it wasn't. I was just noticing.

I made a resolution in January to write one every single week without fail and it had fallen apart by about March — I'd forgotten that until I scrolled back and saw the gap. So no resolutions. It works best when I don't ask anything of it. Some irregular Tuesday, no schedule, no stakes.

A few people read these, apparently, which still surprises me. Hello, if that's you. It really is just this. Weeks and weather and bread. Long may it stay dull.
