bread i got lazy about

2025 · 11

Confession: I've stopped making bread. For now. The loaves had got good over the summer, really good, to the point where I'd stopped weighing anything and was just going by feel. And then over the last few weeks I quietly stopped.

It's the dark. The whole rhythm of it, the long wait and the folding and the second rise, wants a day with some light in it and some time. On a cold evening after work it's just easier to pick up a loaf on the way home and tell yourself you'll get back to it at the weekend, and then you don't.

The bought bread is fine. That's the slightly annoying bit. It's completely fine, and cheaper than flour-and-hours if I'm honest about my time, and nobody here is suffering. M. hasn't said anything, which somehow makes the small guilt worse than a comment would.

Not going to make a thing of it. The starter's in the fridge, sulking but alive, it'll keep. It's just the season for buying bread.
